Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties is a faith-based, nonprofit housing organization with 89 percent of funds coming from private donations. Residents of Pelican Landing and The Colony have sponsored 23 homes since 2002 for families in need in Bonita Springs. With very generous hearts, 593 Pelican Landing and The Colony Residents donated in fiscal year 2020-2021 alone! This is a testament to the dedicated and charitable residents of Pelican Landing and The Colony.

As the demand for affordable housing climbs in Bonita Springs and throughout Southwest Florida, our residents will continue to play a key role in providing homeownership opportunities and a lasting hand up the economic ladder for local families.

We invite everyone in Pelican Landing and The Colony to join us in support of Habitat for Humanity’s vision of a world where everyone can have a decent place to live. Please explore this site to learn more about what we are doing to accomplish this mission and how you can help.

Habitat’s Mission

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Habitat’s Vision

A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Why Affordable Housing is so Important

Apart from the obvious benefit of having a safe, secure home at an affordable cost that allows owners to build equity, affordable housing impacts virtually every area of a family’s life.  Consider some of the following societal benefits of home ownership based on widely available research:

Education

  • Children of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate high school and are 115% more likely to have some post-secondary education
  • Children living in owned homes outperform children in rental houing in both math and reading achievement tests
  • 57% of adults who own H4H homes further their own education

Health

  • Almost 75% of Habitat homeowners report their family’s overall health improved since moving into their own home (even more so during the COVID-19 pandemic)
  • Medical expenses for children living in unstable housing nationwide contribute $8+ billion in avoidable health care costs each year
  • Girls growing up in homes owned by their families are 40 percent less likely to become pregnant during their teenage years

Community

  • The annual default rate is less than 1% on H4H mortgages in Lee & Hendry Counties
  • Over 50% of homeowners use home equity to renovate and/or make incremental home improvements
  • 77 percent of homeowners said they voted in local elections compared with 52 percent of renters
